Can I use AI?
stuff
The world has changed greatly since I first created this challenge. I know we’re all tired of hearing about AI by now, but I think this is an important topic to discuss, especially for beginners.
Question 1: The Ethics
Section titled “Question 1: The Ethics”This challenge isn’t the place for me to give political opinions, it’s a place for us to learn together. However, there are a few important issues you should be aware of:
- Many places (including Steam) require AI content disclosure. note not all AI use counts as AI content. TODO: expand
- Court cases are ongoing, but certain AI models might eventually be considered infringing on copyright. It is possible that you could be liable if your commercial release contains these outputs.
- Historically, the legal system sides with the billion dollar companies, and public opinion follows the courts. There is a good chance that AI will be more accepted by the mainstream by the time you are shipping games.
Question 2: Practicality
Section titled “Question 2: Practicality”Do I need to learn AI? No. You can learn later, and it will build on your existing skills.
Can I use AI? Yes, but treat it like a tutorial. It can generate a simple game like Pong without your input, but it cannot create a complex game. You need to remain in control at each step. We can walk through some practical steps to using AI as a learning tool and assistant rather than a unhealthy crutch.
